Avoiding the Biggest Social Media Mistake

Avoiding the Biggest Social Media Mistake

Listen here: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/catherine-aird/episodes/Avoiding-the-Biggest-Social-Media-Mistake-e2ockt5

When I began my career as a social media marketer, Facebook business pages were just emerging (think 2008). Back then, companies debated if they even needed a website, and traditional advertising—brochures, rack cards, and even the Yellow Pages—was still king. I had the privilege of working with large accounts right from the start, thanks to decent marketing budgets and training with the Facebook marketing team.

But with social media, the game changed. Advertising became a two-way conversation. Not only could people comment on your posts, but they also expected responses—quickly. And with Messenger, Instagram DMs, and other platforms, businesses had to adapt to constant communication.

The biggest mistake I see? People post content but forget to engage! They ignore messages, fail to answer comments, and overlook crucial feedback. It’s like ignoring a customer who walked into your store or hanging up on someone mid-conversation.

This happened to me again recently: I realized some Google reviews hadn’t been answered—so important!

People learn about your business through posts or ads, then ask questions. If you don’t respond, it’s like turning your back on a customer.

Engagement is essential.

One of the strategies I teach in the Six Steps for Social Media Success is to schedule posts. But you can’t just “post and ghost.” Set reminders, check your comments, and reply to messages. Make sure you have a system in place—whether it’s a team member or notifications—to stay on top of things.

To avoid burnout, turn on notifications through Meta Business Suite (formerly Meta Portfolio). Link your Facebook and Instagram so you can manage comments and messages from your desktop, making it easier to reply, archive, or report spam.

Remember, the key is setting up a system that works for you.

For more tips, check out my YouTube videos, where I walk you through these processes step by step.

Finally, be sure to sign up for my course, Six Steps for Social Media Success, and thank you for reading, watching, and subscribing to the podcast. See you in the next episode!
